About Spike

Born in Watsonville, CA, in 1952, I had the quintessential 1950’s small town California upbringing. My father’s parents had landed here while they were agricultural laborers and cannery workers. After my father’s WWII military service in the US Army Air Force, he eventually became a partner in a grocery store. My mom was a business and school secretary through most of her working career. Through their hard work, all three of their sons graduated from college. Along the way, I became what I sometimes referred to as “the least Chinese person I know.” When I turned 55, I went to China, and I have been recovering and relearning my Chinese heritage and culture ever since….slowly, but surely.
